Preserving Your Family Photographs International Edition eBook Maureen Taylor

Let me start by saying that this is the first book on this subject I have looked at, so it's possible that this is the best of what is out there. However, I felt it was only ok. It provides some helpful information on how to distinguish different photos by what type of process was used to create it. but for the most part that doesn't really make much difference in how they are preserved. According to Taylor, all photos are best preserved by putting them in acid-free, archival quality envelopes inside acid-free, archival quality boxes. Apparently it can be difficult to tell which products are truly of archival quality, so the solution Taylor provides is to tell you to call the manufacturer. No list of quality products are given. Photos should also be scanned and preserved digitally and she does generally discuss the options here, although there is no discussion (I don't believe) of cloud storage on lost-cost options like Google Drive. There is some discussion of the things a professional photo conservator can do and a very general discussion of some of the things an individual can do at home to restore photographic images that have been scanned, but they are very general and I feel I would have to do a lot more research to actually do it myself. But all of the information about really would fit into a pamphlet; the rest is a lots and lots of repetition and some not particularly helpful "case studies". I felt this was padded to make it into book length so the price of a book could be charged.

Preserving Your Family Photographs International Edition eBook Maureen Taylor Reviews

I own a 60" long by 10"high photograph of WW1 soldiers somewhere in or near Lima, Ohio. This was my Grandfather Reynolds' picture (my Mother's Father). There are some signatures on the back. My Grandpa and my Mom were immaculate in caring for things and I am really dumbfounded at the condition of this beautiful piece. I am working to restore it which is why I choose this book. For this project, this book has not helped me, BUT, I have lots more to do and am looking forward to using this book a lot! I feel strongly it will be a great help in the immediate future for me.
Much information between covers. Just about every aspect of the title is mentioned. Very pleased. Being told I need 5
I have lots of old family photos dating from the mid 19th century to the present, and this book was extremely helpful. I have been able to archively preserve and organize those photos.
a it too basic and seems to point me in the direction of a professional
Great information
Would recommend this book if you have an extensive collection of Vintage photos - or even newer ones. I have pictures from tintypes to Carte Postales to black and white to modern color. All need to be preserved for future generations, and I'm the one who can identify them. Her recommendations made sense, and I liked how she also suggested alternatives. I may have been written in the last decade, but most of my pictures were taken long before that. Categorizing ideas were good also.
I had read an old version of this from the library and was delighted that a new edition was available. This is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to preserve their family history through photos. It is very readable but it covers just about everything you would want to know from how to handle all kinds of old and new photos to issues related to storage of digital images plus it has appendices with many resources listed. I was happy to see that the digital discussions had been updated to reflect recent technology but I was disappointed that some sections (notably the chapter titled "Ways of Organizing") had been omitted, I suppose to make the book shorter and to enable them to use larger type which is, I admit, much easier to read than the smaller print of the old edition. I gave it four stars mainly for the omissions but would definitely recommend it to all family historians or even to anyone who has boxes of photos in a closet and who would like to know how to store them in a better way.
