Peter the Great ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 7 May 1682 until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his half-brother. In numerous successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a huge empire that became a major European power. He led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political system with a modern, scientific, Europe-oriented, and rationalist system.

The Imperial title of Peter the Great was the following

" By the grace of God, the most excellent and great sovereign prince Pyotr Alekseevich the ruler all the Russias of Moscow, of Kiev, of Vladimir, of Novgorod, Tsar of Kazan, Tsar of Astrakhan and Tsar of Siberia, sovereign of Pskov, great prince of Smolensk, Tversk, Yugorsk, Permsky, Vyatsky, Bulgarsky and others, sovereign and great prince of Novgorod Nizovsky lands, Chernigovsky, of Ryazan, of Rostov, Yaroslavl, Belozersky, Udorsky, Kondiisky and the sovereign of all the northern lands, and the sovereign of the Iverian lands, of the Kartlian and Georgian Kings, of the Kabardin lands, of the Circassian and Mountain princes and many other states and lands western and eastern here and there and the successor and sovereign and ruler.

Peter the Great eBook Jacob Abbott

I am enjoying this older, easy-to-read introduction to Peter the Great, and am a bit surprised two reviewers were so negative. However, there are other reviews of the same book, on Amazon, just not this one, in the Serapis Classics series,
Abbott does use some older words, yes, and has the slightly longwinded style of yore.
It is almost as if he is a teacher giving lessons to teenagers.
I would recommend this book for them, for two reasons, one as as it gives us an easy to read introductory history to Peter the Great without too many convoluted details.
The other reason is that Abbot puts into easy to understand words the mechanisms behind , how to put it, political attitudes that are just as important to understand today as when the Russian Czar was in power.
Some may like their children to read Abbott's thoughts about why despots need a big army and why democracies don't. Others may dislike his thoughts about why religious- and other leaders - are so conservative and afraid of change; they might lose power, prestige and money.

Peter the Great eBook Jacob Abbott Reviews

It's written from different perspective of 140 years ago. The language is different than today's.
I gave this book only three stars mainly because of the author's writing style. It is always telling and not showing. The book did not hold my interest. I also noticed within the first few pages that there were several incidents that do not match research I have done on Peter the Great. The writer refers to the palace guards as the "Strelitz." I have read numerous research books in which these guards are referred to as the "Streltsy". I thought the story was tiring to read and not always entirely accurate. The writer did a nice job putting this long work together. He did include many facts and he obviously did spend time researching but in my opinion, did not get his facts quite straight.
