PX This. (diary of the "Maître d' to the Stars"), by Abbe Diaz, is the witty, irreverent (star-studded) four-year diary of a struggling commercial-artist/fashion-designer moonlighting as a maître d' at some of Manhattan's most renowned restaurants. It is a humorous, poignant, and uniquely insightful romp through the nightly playgrounds of some of New York's (and Hollywood's) most glamorous and elite, as viewed from the front podium.
You'll laugh! You'll cry! It's "the bible of the [NYC fine-dining Food and Beverage] industry."

PX This The Revised Edition Abbe Diaz 9780557431007 Books Reviews

I loved this book, but here's the thing-- I have been swayed by enough fake reviews on that I hardly ever bother to read the glowing 5-STAR ones anymore. For that same reason, I never post reviews either, because if I love something that much I figured nobody would ever believe me, and I never hated anything enough to trash it online for all the world to base their decisions on. (For whatever it's worth, I distrust Yelp too.)

But after I read the 1-STAR reviews about this book, I just had to do it this time. Because those bad reviews are obviously all fake, I am kind of appalled that they are even allowed in the first place.

Since I work in the restaurant industry, I have known about PX This for a long time. And like the reviewer King P, I also worked for Jean-Georges's company, but at different times and places than Abbe Diaz did. Much like Bourdain's well known Kitchen Confidential, so many of my friends and co-workers talked about this PX This, I guess it felt like I already read it. But I just happened to stumble across a mention of this book recently which reminded me of it, so I decided after so many years to give it a try. And I am so glad I did!

My own personal experiences with "Loser" are nothing compared to what Abbe describes, probably because I'm a server and whenever I saw our crazy and inept Director of Operations, I just ran in the other direction. I was completely oblivious to the full extent of Loser's depravity until reading Abbe's hilarious account of her front desk and office exploits. But what I do know for a fact is that Loser was definitely going around asking her little manager gnomes (who kiss her ass, but secretly despise her and also reveled in the release of PX This) if they had accounts specifically so she could SABOTAGE this book.

So I am not at all surprised to see this those terrible reviews, which funny enough are all overly spiteful and malicious, all say pretty much the same thing, are all untrue, and are all nonsense. I particularly like the one that lies and tries to convince you that the free preview is the best part of the book to try and discourage anybody from bothering to read it. Because the preview is exactly what made me finally read PX This, and I can tell you that the beginning about Loser is actually the most boring part and it's more toward the middle after Abbe leaves "Murder Kitchen" that Diaz's story gets so much better.

But just imagine the mind that is so unhinged as to post those bad reviews, which are all just as angry and evil as Loser is, rather than accept the true, honest and scandalous criticism as a challenge to be a better leader and person. WELCOME TO OUR WORLD.

Ugh, I'm sorry that I had to dwell on Loser so much, because her ridiculous exploits are so far from the best this book has to offer. I'll just save my energy and let you read all the GOOD reviews, which are actually the seemingly genuine ones, because they say everything that I want to better than I could. Go figure.

I am giving this book 3-STARS only because I hope people will read my review and trust it, but I really believe it deserves at least 4.
Addictive, gossipy goodness. Like Gawker with a clue (only better).
It will forever change the way you view restaurants and the people who work in them.
Liked it a lot. So funny and well written. But if you think you won't like the humor or diary format, look at the preview first.
It basically says on the very first page that if you don't like diary format you should put the book down.
For people who like humor, restaurants, celebrities, NY glam, etc...
I actually ended up enjoying this immensely and by the end was hoping Abbe would triumph. I've seen her Geld Iaz collection/s and it is gorgeous. She is very talented. Her diary offered an interesting insight into creative process and uphill battle facing struggling fashion designers. (And I can't stop using the word "sweating" in my head now. Thanks Abbe.)
I had PX This saved on my to-read list for ages because I just simply didn't have the time to leisure read. I finally bought it over winter break and LOVED it. Abbe Diaz's writing style is so easy to read and makes you feel like you're having a conversation with a friend. The book is a diary of her day-to-day occurrences, which could be boring, but Diaz makes them into one big entertaining story. The name dropping isn't obnoxious - it's just her recording what happened, and the book is an interesting insight into the restaurant industry (which I knew nothing about prior to reading her book). I was sad when I realized I was about to finish it, so I went ahead and bought the sequel too )
PX This is the BIBLE of the high-end New York restaurant industry. I have worked for one of the very same companies that is written about extensively in PX This, and its author is a hero for writing such a brave, smart, and insanely funny book. As a matter of fact, right after this book was published, all current and future employees of Jean-Georges's worldwide restaurants were suddenly required to sign confidentiality agreements, and we were all THREATENED WITH TERMINATION if anyone so much as mentioned this book anywhere on company property. That alone should give you some idea of the incredible stories that it exposes, and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Watching this prestigious company use their influence with the media and the "foodie fans" over the years to try and squelch the unfavorable exposure within this book, has been one of the most fascinating and hysterical turn of events in the history of this industry.

Aside from the wonderful satisfaction of watching my former employers squirm in fear and outrage, however, is the fact that this is one of the most hilarious, heartwarming, and inspirational stories I have ever read. As much as I loved that part of it, there is actually so much more to this book than over-hyped Jean-Georges and his Idiot Right-Hand Woman, "Loser." Believe it or not, they ultimately end up being the boring part, when you get down to the real meat of the entire story.

PX This is by far one of the best, funniest, amazing, and most entertaining books I have read in my life. Can't wait to see what comes next.
